Robinhood Joins 24/7 Trading Frenzy as Wall Street Moves Towards Crypto Hours
Retail brokerage firm Robinhood plans to expand its trading hours to include weekends, allowing clients to participate in US stock and ETF trading around the clock. This move is part of a broader trend towards continuous market operation, similar to cryptocurrency markets.
The company has partnered with Bruce ATS, an overnight trading infrastructure provider, to launch weekend trading. However, only a limited number of equities and ETFs will be available at launch, pending regulatory approval.
Roger Oholi of Marex Clearing suggests that the shift towards 24/7 markets is driven by large asset management firms and corporates seeking to hedge over weekends rather than waiting for weekdays. Implementing this change requires higher requirements for clearing, staffing, settlement, and risk management.
