Robinhood Shares Surge 14% as Crypto Market Recovery Lifts Company
Robinhood shares surged nearly 14% on Friday as the cryptocurrency market recovery positively impacted companies with significant exposure to digital assets. The HOOD stock price rose to $108.31, reaching a high of $109.71 during the session.
The crypto rally came amidst renewed attention from Washington on crypto regulation and prediction markets, key areas of growth for Robinhood. The company earns revenue when customers trade cryptocurrencies, benefiting from stronger prices and increased market activity.
Washington's focus extends beyond cryptocurrency, with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission discussing digital assets and prediction markets at its inaugural Innovation Advisory Committee meeting on August 20. Chairman Michael Selig suggested that the agency could create a crypto-market framework using existing powers if Congress doesn't pass legislation.
Rising prediction market activity is also driving growth for Robinhood, with customers trading 6.1 billion event contracts in July, a 20x increase from the previous year. The company's expanding reach includes recent launches like crypto trading for UK customers through Bitstamp's British operation on August 10.
