Robinhood Shares Surge as SEC Tokenization Rule Favors Blockchain Pioneer
Shares of Robinhood Markets Inc. surged 8.94% to $119.62 in trading on Friday, adding $9.82, as the platform benefited from a broader rally in crypto-linked equities and a new regulatory development from the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The SEC's 'innovation exemption' allows for tokenized stocks registered under the National Market System, bringing U.S. equity markets closer to round-the-clock trading. Robinhood, which has invested heavily in blockchain-based trading infrastructure through its proprietary Robinhood Chain platform, was identified as a primary beneficiary of the new exemption.
Ryan Tenev, CEO of Robinhood, previously framed tokenization as central to the company's growth strategy, saying it 'allows us to distribute access to U.S. stocks globally.' This move comes alongside a broader rally across crypto-linked equities, with Coinbase and Strategy Inc. also posting sharp gains as bitcoin's price climbed above $80,000 following the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision.
Robinhood's underlying financial results have supported optimism around the company's growth prospects, with revenue of $1.31 billion in its most recent quarterly results ahead of analyst expectations and adjusted earnings of 62 cents per share beating the consensus estimate by more than 44%.
