Robinhood Tokenized Stocks Fuel $440M Memecoin Speculation Frenzy
Tokenized shares of companies like Snap and Nvidia on the Robinhood Chain have become linked to memecoin speculation, with daily trading volume in such pairs reaching $440 million in early September. This trend emerged as tokenization of traditional assets gained traction, allowing traders to use stock-linked tokens as liquidity for memecoins and create new speculative instruments around public companies.
Low Che Sheng, a 27-year-old trader from Singapore, explained that trading with tokenized stocks on Robinhood feels like a direct connection to the underlying company's shares. For example, buying a token tied to Snap's stock is equivalent to having a stake in the company itself, he said.
The prices of these tokens can deviate significantly from the value of the underlying shares due to available liquidity and the token ratio in decentralized pools. As a result, traders like Eric Conner have been buying and selling memecoins linked to popular stocks, with some even creating new speculative instruments around them.
