Robinhood's Blockchain Choice Sparks Debate Over Transaction Costs

Robinhood's choice of blockchain infrastructure has sparked a debate between Offchain Labs and Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko over transaction costs and revenue sharing.

Yakovenko argued that Robinhood could have offered users a fully gasless experience on Solana if it had retained 10% of fees, which would be equivalent to four times the network's transaction fees. However, Offchain Labs co-founder Steven Goldfeder rejected this comparison, stating that Arbitrum's fee structure is different from Solana's and that Robinhood retains about 90% of gas fees generated on its chain.

Goldefeder also pointed out that a move to Solana would have required Robinhood to subsidize transaction costs paid on behalf of users. He framed the decision as a question of control over transaction economics rather than simply the absolute cost of network fees.

The dispute highlights the importance of considering fee revenue distribution when evaluating transaction costs, and it illustrates the growing competition among blockchain networks to attract major consumer-facing applications like Robinhood Chain.
