Robinhood's Meme Coin-Stock Pairings Hit $440M Daily Volume
Retail trading platform Robinhood has built an infrastructure that allows traders to pair real stocks with meme coins, fundamentally changing the appeal of meme coins. The infrastructure is based on stock tokens, which are digital securities backed 1:1 by underlying shares held with a custodian. These tokens trade on the same open crypto markets as meme coins, allowing for direct swaps between the two.
The most popular pairings included tokens tied to an S&P 500 ETF, Nvidia, SpaceX, and Meta, which reached a combined market value of roughly $69 million at their peak in early September. The daily volume in memecoin-stock-token pairs peaked near $440 million before dropping off sharply.
Robinhood co-founder Vlad Tenev pushed back against AMC CEO Adam Aron's demand to stop trading a token tied to AMC shares without the company's involvement, highlighting the lack of control public companies have over their stock once it becomes raw material for crypto markets. Galaxy Digital head of firmwide research Alex Thorn called this permissionless structure a preview of what's possible once tokenized stocks live on open blockchain rails.
Robinhood is pushing further into this space, announcing plans to offer weekend US stock trading alongside leveraged perpetual futures on select cryptocurrencies. The SEC has granted temporary exemptions for certain venues to trade tokenized US stocks on-chain under specified conditions.
