Rockstar Cracks Down on Modders with New Guidelines
Rockstar Games has issued updated guidelines for mod creators working on its popular titles, including Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption. The new policy targets story modifications, multiplayer projects, intellectual property, prohibited content, and monetization.
The rules prohibit mods that alter official continuity or transfer content between Rockstar games, such as bringing Red Dead Redemption locations into GTA 5. Modders are also not allowed to expand or modify official storylines, missions, characters, plots, or other parts of a game's established continuity.
Rockstar's Creator Platform is now the exclusive licensed destination for monetizing community mods, with projects operating outside this ecosystem remaining strictly non-commercial unless authorized by Rockstar. The company has also prohibited loot boxes, cryptocurrency, real-money gambling, and sponsored content in mods.
