Rural Republicans Block CLARITY Act Over Stablecoin Yield Restrictions
The US Senate's CLARITY Act is facing internal Republican opposition due to disagreements over stablecoin yield restrictions. The bill aims to regulate the crypto market, but a group of rural GOP senators are backing the banking industry's push for tighter controls on stablecoin rewards.
The concern is that if crypto platforms offer competitive rewards on dollar-pegged stablecoins like USDC, local banks risk losing deposits used to fund agricultural and small-business lending. This has become a politically potent argument in states where community banks are financial lifelines.
Senator Cynthia Lummis, a champion of the CLARITY Act, has argued that activity-based rewards are fundamentally different from deposit interest and should not be conflated. However, her stance may not be enough to sway rural Republicans who are pushing for stricter regulations.
