Russia Bans Crypto Mining in Moscow Until 2032 Amid Energy Concerns
Russia has imposed a ban on cryptocurrency mining in Moscow and surrounding regions until December 31, 2032. The decision is aimed at reducing power demand and preventing electricity shortages as the region's energy supply continues to rise.
The restrictions come into effect on August 15, 2026, after being postponed from July 1, 2026, due to concerns about the strain on the regional power grid.
Russia remains one of the world's largest Bitcoin mining hubs, with an estimated 17.2% of the global Bitcoin hash rate as of Q3 2026.
The ban is part of Russia's broader effort to regulate cryptocurrency mining and protect its electricity supplies. In December 2024, a ban on crypto mining was implemented in 10 regions, mainly to reduce pressure on regional power grids.
