Russia Binds Moscow Bitcoin Mining Until 2032 Due to Power Strains
Russia has banned Bitcoin mining in Moscow and surrounding areas until December 31, 2032, due to concerns over power capacity shortages. The government decree No. 936 was signed on July 25 and published on July 31.
The ban affects the capital city of Moscow, as well as the Moscow Region and parts of Kursk. According to the Energy Ministry, mining currently consumes around 1 gigawatt in the Moscow power system, which is a significant burden on the grid.
Russia has been cracking down on crypto mining since 2024, when it legalized registered mining before banning the activity in several regions through March 2031. The ban was later extended to southern Irkutsk and most areas of Buryatia and Zabaykalsky Krai.
