Russia Blocks Cryptocurrency Mining in Moscow Through 2032
Russia has expanded its ban on cryptocurrency mining to include Moscow and its surrounding region. The restrictions, formalized in Government Resolution No. 936, will remain in place through December 31, 2032.
The ban affects both direct cryptocurrency mining and participation in mining pools from the affected territories, covering eight municipal districts in Kursk Oblast and the city of Lgov.
The Russian Ministry of Energy justified the measure as a way to prevent a potential shortfall in energy capacity. The ministry estimates that mining consumes about one gigawatt across the Moscow power system, with roughly half of that demand falling within Moscow and its surrounding region.
