Russia Booms as Global Hub for Bitcoin Mining
Russia's Bitcoin mining market is experiencing significant growth, making it an attractive destination for hardware providers like Bitmain and MicroBT. The country's access to inexpensive electricity and cold temperatures has long made it a leader in terms of Bitcoin hash rate.
Ethan Vera, COO at Luxor Technologies, noted that more equipment is entering Russia than any other country, due to better mining economics and reduced regulatory oversight compared to the US and other countries. As a result, Russia's mining market share increased after China's industry was outlawed in 2021.
Russia has become the second- or third-largest Bitcoin mining market in the world despite international sanctions imposed on the country due to its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. However, these sanctions do not entirely prohibit participation in the mining industry. The low energy costs and favorable business environment are encouraging Russian miners to expand their operations.
