Russia Cracks Down on Crypto Mining Amid Power Grid Concerns

The Russian government has introduced a ban on Bitcoin mining rigs in Moscow until 2032 as part of efforts to preserve power grid stability. The Energy Ministry cited rising electricity demand and energy-intensive crypto mining activities as reasons for the restriction, which is set to last until December 31st, 2024 was the year that Russia legalized registered mining.

The ban specifically targets Bitcoin mining and participation in mining pools in Moscow, the surrounding region, and parts of Kursk. According to figures from earlier this year, Bitcoin mining currently consumes around 1 gigawatt in Moscow's power system.

This move highlights ongoing tensions between crypto mining's energy needs and regional power supply limitations. Russia's strategy aims to manage energy resources amid Western sanctions, which has likely contributed to the decision to restrict mining activities.
