Russia Extends Crypto Mining Ban in Moscow Region Until 2032
Russia has extended its restrictions on cryptocurrency mining in certain regions to combat energy supply concerns. The ban, which takes effect from August 15th and runs until December 31st, 2032, applies to Moscow, the surrounding Moscow region, and parts of Kursk Oblast.
The measure aims to prevent potential power shortages by limiting the connection of electricity-intensive mining facilities to the grid. According to estimates, cryptocurrency mining consumes around 1GW of electricity in the Moscow region.
Russia has been regulating cryptocurrency mining nationally rather than imposing a nationwide ban. This new restriction builds on regional strategies introduced in late 2024, which included mining limits in energy-constrained areas.
