Russia Introduces Digital Ruble and Regulated Cryptocurrency Framework
Russia is implementing two separate financial systems in 2026: the digital ruble and cryptocurrency. The digital ruble, issued by the Bank of Russia, will be used for domestic transactions and will not earn interest. It's designed to make payments programmable, inexpensive, and verifiable.
Cryptocurrency, on the other hand, is an independent digital asset with a market price that can fluctuate sharply. Russia needs it for investment and cross-border transactions, which are currently restricted. The government aims to create intermediaries, accounting rules, and taxation mechanisms for the cryptocurrency market, estimated to be worth 10-15 trillion rubles.
The digital ruble and cryptocurrency will operate separately from each other, with different purposes and risks. The digital ruble is a form of the national currency, while cryptocurrency is a regulated investment asset. Russia needs both instruments to improve its economy's efficiency and expand cross-border settlement options.
