Russia Pays Government Employees in Digital Rubles
Russia has taken a significant step in its digital ruble pilot program by paying government employees' salaries in the new currency. The Ministry of Finance announced that a group of ministry employees received their first official salaries paid in digital rubles on October 1, 2026.
The rollout is part of the broader legislative framework enabling federal government departments to utilize the digital ruble for public disbursements. Ministry employees who opted into the pilot opened dedicated digital ruble accounts directly on the Bank of Russia's digital platform.
By routing payroll through the central bank's ledger architecture, financial authorities are stress-testing the speed, security, and scalability of programmatic government spending and state-backed tokenized fund transfers.
