Russia Regulates Crypto Trading Amid Ongoing Financial Sanctions
Russia has taken a significant step towards integrating digital assets into its formal financial system by signing a landmark law legalizing regulated cryptocurrency trading. The legislation, officially known as the Law on Digital Currencies and Digital Rights, establishes a comprehensive framework for crypto trading while maintaining the prohibition on using cryptocurrencies as a means of payment within Russia.
The new law aims to reduce risks associated with unregulated markets while creating opportunities for investment and international commerce. To qualify for trading under Russia's regulated market, a cryptocurrency must have maintained an average market capitalization exceeding 5 trillion rubles (approximately $64 billion) and average daily trading volumes above 1 trillion rubles (around $12.8 billion) over the previous two years.
Only a limited number of digital assets currently satisfy these criteria, including Bitcoin, Ether, and USDT. The Central Bank retains the authority to approve additional cryptocurrencies in the future, provided they meet established financial and liquidity standards.
