Russia Slams Brakes on Bitcoin Mining in Key Regions

Russia has imposed a long-term ban on Bitcoin mining in certain regions to balance cryptocurrency regulation with growing concerns over energy demand.

The restrictions, which take effect from August 15, 2026, will last until December 31, 2032. The government decree covers the mining of all digital currencies and participation in mining pools in Moscow, the surrounding Moscow Oblast, and parts of Kursk Oblast.

The measure expands on an existing framework introduced in December 2024 for restricting mining in areas facing electricity constraints. Russia's Energy Ministry warned that allowing mining to continue year-round could create shortages as energy-intensive facilities connect to local grids.
