Russian Digital Currency Law Triggers EU Sanctions Risk
The Russian government has introduced a new law regulating digital currencies, which creates an asymmetry between large businesses and ordinary citizens. For big companies, this law is seen as a tool to bypass sanctions, while for individuals it means stricter limits, taxes, and control.
However, the attempt to shift transactions to state platforms has made them a target for European Union (EU) sanctions. Analysts warn that the 21st package of EU sanctions could have severe consequences, including labeling any cryptocurrency purchased through official Russian infrastructure as 'toxic.'
This could ultimately make legal cross-border transactions impossible and push small and medium-sized businesses to conduct transactions in the informal sector.
