Russian Spies Use Crypto and Telegram to Incite Chaos Across Europe

Russian spies are using Telegram and cryptocurrencies to incite chaos across Europe. A study released by the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) has uncovered a network of Telegram groups, called 'com networks', where participants compete for clout by uploading harmful content.

The com networks have been linked to Russia, with the ISD suggesting that there are 'multiple indicators' pointing to state-linked support. These groups offer payments in crypto for arson attacks, a method that is 'completely new', according to study author Steven Rai.

The study found that thousands of dollars worth of USDT was offered to a 22-year-old Ukrainian in return for carrying out an attack on a house in hopes of attracting press coverage. The ISD also linked the com networks to Direct Action, a Russian-manufactured far-right group that organized the fire bombing of former UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer's house.

The Security Service of Ukraine has described recent incidents as a Russian intelligence operation. In one instance, Ukrainian police arrested two young boys, aged 11 and 15, who were allegedly planning to attack their school with guns and explosives 'on the orders of the Russian Federation'.
