Russians Flock to Cryptocurrencies Amid Kremlin Concerns
The Kremlin is growing increasingly concerned about the rapid adoption of cryptocurrencies among Russian citizens. According to the latest financial stability report from the Russian Central Bank, there has been a significant uptick in crypto-related activity since Q4 2023.
Web traffic on major crypto sites increased by 16.4% during this period, with Russians making 104.6 million visits to these platforms. Notably, 7% of all traffic on major international crypto exchanges originates from Russia, slightly down from a 9% peak last year.
The bank's report highlights the risks associated with holding cryptocurrencies in Russia, particularly amid growing geopolitical tensions and the possibility of sanctions from Western countries. As a result, the bank has advised domestic financial institutions to steer clear of crypto-related financial instruments and services.
