Russia's Central Bank Tightens Oversight on Crypto Risk Disclosure
The Bank of Russia plans to strengthen oversight of how investors are informed about cryptocurrency risks when buying digital currencies and related instruments. According to Deputy Chairman Mikhail Mamuta, penalties may follow for dishonest disclosure to buyers.
The Central Bank will focus on misselling situations where a client is sold one financial product under the guise of another or key features are withheld. For the new market, this is a particularly sensitive topic as digital currencies become available to retail investors through licensed intermediaries starting September 1.
Buyers need to understand how a digital asset differs from an instrument within a regular payment system and why the price of Bitcoin, Ethereum, or Ripple can fluctuate sharply. Volatility means frequent and significant price swings, affecting the decision to buy, sell, or hold a position.
