Russia's Crypto Adoption Soars: 20 Million Citizens Invest Over $43 Billion
Russia has emerged as one of the leading countries in cryptocurrency adoption, ranking 16th globally according to Chainalysis' Global Crypto Adoption Index Report. Deputy Finance Minister Ivan Chebeskov estimates that at least 20 million Russians have invested in crypto products.
The total value of these investments stands at over $43 billion (3.7 trillion rubles), with three distinct pools of capital being used: foreign trade settlements, mining, and speculative trading and savings. The Russian government is exploring ways to bring these funds back into the country's regulated exchange sector.
Russia's use of stablecoins in foreign trade settlements has been particularly significant, given the country's disconnection from the SWIFT banking system and potential secondary sanctions on banks serving Russian customers purchasing dual-use products. 'Finam' analyst Alexander Potavin notes that stablecoins are ideal for this purpose due to their lack of volatility.
The government is also seeking to harness the economic benefits of crypto mining, which remains a significant industry in Russia despite expanded prohibitions on certain zones. Miners invest heavily in infrastructure, generating jobs and taxes.
