Russia's Digital Ruble Launches Amid Cryptocurrency Ban
Russia is launching its digital ruble on September 1, marking a significant step in promoting state-supported currency in daily transactions. Major telecom firms and e-commerce businesses will be among the first to accept the digital ruble.
Three of Russia's four major mobile phone operators - MTS, Rostelecom, and MegaFon - have confirmed they will accept digital rubles from launch. Payments will be processed through their respective platforms, with MTS using its MTS Pay module.
The rollout is in line with a law that came into effect in July 2025, which requires retailers with significant revenue to accept payments in digital rubles by September 2026. The Central Bank Governor Elvira Nabiullina has stated that 'technologically, everything is ready' for the launch.
The introduction of the digital ruble draws a clear distinction between state-backed currency and private cryptocurrencies. Russians will be able to access wallets through existing banking apps and pay no fees, but they will still not be allowed to spend Bitcoin or other decentralized tokens directly.
