Russia’s Finance Ministry Employees Paid in Digital Rubles for First Time
For the first time, employees of Russia’s Ministry of Finance received their wages in digital rubles on October 1. Staff members opened accounts on the Bank of Russia’s platform to facilitate these budget payments.
The digital ruble was officially launched on September 1, with major banks and retail companies already integrating the currency into their systems. Russian citizens can choose to have their salaries paid in digital rubles, though the option remains voluntary.
The Bank of Russia and the Ministry of Finance have been collaborating to incorporate the digital ruble into federal budget processes. Early pilot payments last year included salaries, student stipends, and state contract settlements, totaling nearly 16 million rubles (approximately $190,945).
Since January, federal budget spending in digital rubles has expanded beyond specific expenses. Government institutions can now freely use and accept digital rubles for various payments. Unlike decentralized cryptocurrencies, the digital ruble is issued and controlled by the Bank of Russia.
