RWA Credit Vaults Leave Investors Vulnerable to Defaults

Share

RWA credit vaults have become popular in crypto markets for connecting blockchain finance with traditional lending. However, the structure of some RWA platforms can create a gap between the yield investors receive and their legal rights if a borrower defaults.

According to Jeff Amico, chief operating officer at GensynAI, this is a common issue across the market. Users may receive a yield-bearing stablecoin from a platform, while the underlying loan and collateral are held through separate entities. This can mean investors rely on the platform rather than holding direct claims against the borrower or assets securing the loan.

'The usual pattern is that the user gets a yield-bearing stablecoin, governed by a platform’s terms of service,' Amico said. 'But the actual loan and collateral sit one or more entities below.' This setup means users have no enforceable claim against the underlying borrower/SPV entities or their collateral.

To assess an RWA credit vault, investors should prioritize understanding their legal position rather than focusing solely on the headline yield, Amico advises. 'You need to determine if the lien on that collateral is perfected and whether there is an agent who will step in and enforce liquidation on your behalf in a default,' he said.
