RWA DeFi Deposits Near $4 Billion Amid Growing Sector
The Real World Assets (RWA) sector is witnessing significant growth in DeFi deposits, nearing $4 billion. According to DefiLlama, this figure stood at $3.98 billion as of August 18, a sixfold increase from just one year ago.
This growth is not reflected across all asset types, however. Tokenized Treasuries, issued by companies like BlackRock and Franklin Templeton, have low utilization rates, with only around 0.66% of BUIDL's $2.74 billion being used in DeFi. These funds were designed for institutional cash management, providing faster settlement but not collateral.
In contrast, private credit and reinsurance tokens are driving the growth, with private credit accounting for over half of the active total at $2.13 billion. Janus Henderson's Anemoy AAA CLO fund is a notable example, running at 97.53% utilization on $421.88 million.
The sector's growth has raised questions about whether issuance will continue to outpace utilization. If it does, tokenization may primarily serve as a custody solution for institutions, rather than providing working collateral in crypto credit markets.
