RWA Tokenization Surges Past $30 Billion in Value
RWA tokenization is a process of representing real-world assets as digital tokens on a blockchain. This allows for the creation of tradable, divisible, and programmable assets that were previously locked in paper form or behind institutional gatekeeping.
The mechanics of RWA tokenization involve a custodian holding the underlying asset and a smart contract minting a token that represents a claim on it. The token is then recorded on a blockchain where it can be transferred, split into smaller units, or plugged into other financial applications.
According to data, the on-chain value tied to RWA tokenization grew from roughly $5 billion in early 2025 to around $29 to $31 billion by mid-2026. This represents an increase of over 400 percent in under two years.
The largest and most mature segment of RWA tokenization is tokenized US Treasuries and money market funds, followed closely by private credit and tokenized commodities, mostly gold.
