S&P 500 to Hit 7,900-8,000 by August: Tom Lee Predicts Strong Corporate Earnings Fuel Rally
Renowned analyst Tom Lee from Fundstrat is predicting that the S&P 500 will hit 7,900 to 8,000 in August. According to him, strong corporate earnings and improving investor sentiment are driving this forecast. He attributes the market's recent recovery to a deleveraging event several weeks ago, which forced investors to raise cash and left market sentiment excessively bearish.
Lee emphasizes that corporate profits are a key factor in his S&P 500 prediction. With quarterly earnings running more than $15 above initial estimates and 2027 earnings expectations increasing by about $8 to nearly 410, he believes this trend will continue, potentially reaching 425 by the end of earnings season.
While many might expect Lee's predictions to focus on traditional stocks, he also highlighted Ethereum as a potential leader in the next phase of the broader risk rally. However, it's essential to note that Ethereum itself would not drive the S&P 500 higher, but rather be one of several assets that could outperform.
Lee remains optimistic about semiconductor, DRAM, and memory stocks despite their recent correction, comparing the setup with market recoveries seen in 1997 and 1998. On the other hand, CNBC panelist Dan Greenhouse offered a more restrained interpretation, pointing to economic strength extending beyond technology and highlighting positive signals from financial companies, insurers, and card issuers.
