S&P Global Acquires OpenZeppelin in Blockchain Security Push
S&P Global has made a significant move into blockchain and digital-asset security by agreeing to acquire OpenZeppelin. The deal, announced on September 17, will expand S&P Global's presence in onchain finance as institutional adoption of blockchain infrastructure grows.
OpenZeppelin secures more than $250 billion in digital assets and has audited smart contract libraries that underpin major crypto projects. Its code has processed a staggering $31.1 trillion of value to date, with nine out of the top ten stablecoins by market cap built on OpenZeppelin's audited code.
S&P Global's President of S&P Global Ratings, Yann Le Pallec, stated that their digital assets strategy centers on bringing trusted data and transparent risk assessment to markets as they move onchain. He sees the acquisition as a strategic fit for expanding their smart contract and onchain technology risk assessment capabilities.
The deal is expected to strengthen S&P Global's position in the crypto space, which has seen significant growth since 2021. The company has launched crypto indices and issued risk assessments for tokenized funds and DeFi protocols.
