S&P Global Develops Risk Framework for $10 Billion Crypto Lending Sector
S&P Global Ratings has rolled out a new risk assessment framework for onchain lending vaults, a move that comes as deposits in this sector have surged to $10 billion. The Vault Risk Assessment (VRA) framework evaluates six key areas: credit quality, liquidity mismatch, curator risk, blockchain risk, protocol risk, and vault security and governance. This initiative aims to bring Wall Street-style risk standards to the rapidly growing decentralized finance (DeFi) lending market, which has seen deposits rise from $1.5 billion two years earlier to $10 billion as of September 2026.
The framework is designed to provide institutions with a standardized view of the risks associated with DeFi lending vaults, which pool crypto investor deposits and deploy them under predefined strategies. While these vaults offer real-time transparency into transactions and balances, S&P Global argues that transparency around strategy and risk has often been lacking. Yann Le Pallec, president of S&P Global Ratings, emphasized the need for independent risk assessments to bridge traditional finance and decentralized innovation.
The VRA is not a credit rating but rather a tool to assess the likelihood that an investor’s position in a lending vault could be impaired. This could be particularly important for asset managers, corporate treasuries, and other institutions considering exposure to DeFi. High yields may look attractive, but the real risks could lie in areas such as liquidity mismatches, smart-contract vulnerabilities, governance failures, or the quality of assets within the vault. James Wiemken, S&P’s head of global ratings services, highlighted the varying disclosure standards as a clear need for an independent framework.
This latest move is part of S&P Global’s broader expansion into digital assets. The company has previously launched stablecoin stability assessments, issued a credit rating for DeFi lender Sky Protocol, and rated a bitcoin-backed structured-finance transaction from Ledn. Additionally, S&P Global has invested in crypto infrastructure, including an agreement to acquire smart-contract security firm Openzeppelin and a strategic investment in digital-asset data provider Kaiko. The $10 billion sector has grown significantly from a niche market, prompting traditional finance’s biggest ratings firms to develop specialized risk frameworks.
