S&P Global Introduces Risk Assessment Framework for DeFi Lending Vaults
S&P Global Ratings has introduced a new framework called Vault Risk Assessment (VRA) to evaluate the risks associated with blockchain-based lending vaults. This move comes as deposits in the sector surged from approximately USD 1.5 billion in September 2024 to around USD 10 billion by September 2026, marking a 6.7 times growth over two years. The VRA assesses six key risks that could impact investor positions, including portfolio credit quality, liquidity mismatch, curator risk, blockchain risk, protocol risk, and vault security and governance risk.
The framework aims to provide a forward-looking assessment of potential impairment risks rather than predicting returns or yield opportunities. It addresses concerns about the growing exposure of investors to the strategies and structures of these vaults, which pool investor deposits and deploy assets on blockchain networks using defined strategies. Some vaults rely on smart contracts for automation, while others use human managers or a combination of both.
S&P Global Ratings President Yann Le Pallec highlighted the demand for independent assessments that bridge traditional finance and decentralized markets. The VRA offers a standardized approach for institutional investors to analyze on-chain lending exposure without redefining the underlying products. The firm plans to publish its first Vault Risk Assessments in future announcements, though no specific timeline or eligible vaults have been identified yet.
The launch of the VRA reflects S&P Global’s effort to enhance risk transparency in the rapidly expanding DeFi lending sector. By separating risk analysis from yield evaluation and conventional credit ratings, the framework provides a structured method for assessing impairment risks in blockchain lending vaults.
