S&P Global Introduces Risk Framework for DeFi Lending Market
S&P Global Ratings has introduced a new risk assessment framework designed specifically for the decentralized finance (DeFi) lending market, which has reached a record $10 billion in deposits. The market has seen a nearly sevenfold increase from $1.5 billion just two years ago. The Vault Risk Assessment (VRA) framework, launched on October 5, 2026, aims to provide investors with a clearer understanding of the risks associated with digital asset lending vaults.
The VRA assigns each vault a score based on its risk level, with AAA(v) representing the lowest risk of losing money. Lower scores indicate higher risk. S&P Global explains that these vaults can function similarly to managed fixed-income funds, either through automated smart contracts or human curation. Yann Le Pallec, President of S&P Global Ratings, emphasized the importance of independent risk assessments as digital assets become more integrated into traditional finance.
To determine the VRA score, S&P evaluates six key areas: portfolio credit quality, liquidity mismatch, curator risk, blockchain risk, protocol risk, and vault security and governance. The combined factors result in a letter-based score, with AAA(v) signifying the lowest relative risk. S&P plans to publish individual Vault Risk Assessments in future announcements. James Wiemken, executive managing director and head of Global Ratings Service, highlighted that the VRA addresses the need for standardized risk assessment in the complex DeFi market.
The framework's launch coincides with significant growth in the DeFi lending market. Deposits in on-chain lending vaults have surged from $1.5 billion in September 2024 to $10 billion, driven by protocols like Morpho and Euler. These platforms allow users to pool capital into automated lending strategies, making the market increasingly attractive to institutional investors.
