S&P Global Introduces Risk Scores for DeFi Lending Market
S&P Global Ratings has introduced a new risk assessment framework tailored for crypto lending vaults, as the DeFi lending market reaches a record $10 billion in deposits. The market has expanded nearly sevenfold from $1.5 billion over the past two years, highlighting the growing need for standardized risk evaluations in decentralized finance.
The Vault Risk Assessment (VRA) framework, launched on 5 October 2026, assigns a letter-based score to each vault, with AAA(v) indicating the lowest risk. The framework evaluates six key risk areas: portfolio credit quality, liquidity mismatch, curator risk, blockchain risk, protocol risk, and vault security and governance. These scores aim to help investors compare risks across different lending products.
Yann Le Pallec, President of S&P Global Ratings, emphasized the importance of independent risk assessments as digital assets become more integrated into traditional finance. The VRA framework is designed to bridge the gap between traditional finance and decentralized innovation, providing clarity in a complex market.
The introduction of the VRA comes amid rapid growth in crypto lending vaults, which include products built on protocols like Morpho and Euler. These vaults allow users to pool capital into automated lending strategies, but the lack of standardized risk disclosures has made it difficult for investors to assess risks. S&P plans to publish individual Vault Risk Assessments in future announcements.
