S&P Global Launches Framework to Assess Risks in Blockchain Lending Vaults
S&P Global Ratings has introduced the Vault Risk Assessment (VRA) framework, a new tool designed to evaluate the risks associated with blockchain-based lending vaults. This development comes amid a surge in deposits within digital asset vaults, which grew from approximately $1.5 billion in September 2024 to about $10 billion in September 2026, a 6.7-fold increase over two years.
The VRA framework assesses six key risk categories: portfolio credit quality, liquidity mismatch, curator risk, blockchain risk, protocol risk, and vault security and governance risk. These factors aim to provide a structured, forward-looking analysis of potential risks that could impact investors' positions in decentralized finance (DeFi) lending vaults.
S&P Global emphasizes that the VRA is not a conventional credit rating nor an evaluation of a vault’s yield attractiveness. Instead, it offers a standardized approach to comparing risks across different blockchain lending vaults, helping institutions navigate the rapidly expanding DeFi market.
The framework reflects the view that a vault’s risk cannot be determined solely by its current asset holdings. Market conditions, liquidity, management decisions, and blockchain infrastructure all play crucial roles in preserving the value of investors' positions. S&P Global plans to publish initial Vault Risk Assessments in future announcements, though specific details on coverage and eligibility remain unspecified.
