S&P Global Launches Risk Framework for Crypto Lending Vaults
S&P Global Ratings has launched a new risk assessment framework specifically for digital asset lending vaults, responding to the rapid growth of onchain yield products. The Vault Risk Assessment framework evaluates potential investor losses across six key areas: portfolio credit quality risk, liquidity mismatch risk, curator risk, blockchain risk, protocol risk, and vault security and governance risk. Unlike traditional credit ratings, this tool does not predict returns but focuses on identifying vulnerabilities that could lead to financial losses.
The framework emphasizes that no single risk category is inherently more dangerous than others. A material weakness in any area can significantly impact the overall risk assessment, and strengths in one area cannot compensate for severe gaps in another. S&P Global Ratings estimates that deposits in digital asset lending vaults reached approximately $10 billion in September, up from $1.5 billion two years earlier, highlighting the sector's rapid expansion.
Digital asset lending vaults typically pool deposits and deploy capital through smart contracts or human-managed strategies, issuing vault tokens to depositors. S&P's analyst Lisa Schroeer underscored the framework's goal of enhancing risk visibility for investors. The tool aims to help capital allocators understand the structural risks of these products without evaluating their expected returns.
Recent incidents, such as the $8.5 million loss at the lending protocol Term Finance due to governance vulnerabilities, illustrate the importance of robust risk assessments. As the crypto lending sector continues to grow, regulatory uncertainties persist, particularly in the United States, where some vaults may fall under federal securities laws depending on their operational structure.
