S&P Global Launches Risk Framework for DeFi Lending Vaults
S&P Global Ratings has introduced its Vault Risk Assessment (VRA) framework for blockchain-based lending vaults, as deposits in the sector near USD 10 billion. The framework evaluates six key risks that could impact investor positions, including portfolio credit quality, liquidity mismatch, curator risk, blockchain risk, protocol risk, and vault security and governance risk.
The launch follows a significant surge in digital asset vault deposits, which grew from approximately USD 1.5 billion in September 2024 to about USD 10 billion by September 2026. This rapid expansion, representing a 6.7-fold increase, has heightened investor exposure to the strategies and operational structures of these vaults.
Vaults pool investor deposits and deploy assets on a blockchain using predefined strategies, sometimes relying on smart contracts for automation or human managers for active oversight. Investors receive share tokens representing proportional claims on the vault’s assets and returns, but these tokens do not eliminate risks tied to strategy, liquidity, governance, and management decisions.
S&P Global emphasizes that the VRA is not a conventional credit rating nor does it predict yields. Instead, it provides a forward-looking assessment of impairment risks, aiming to offer institutions a standardized analytical approach to evaluate on-chain lending exposure. The first Vault Risk Assessments are expected to be published in future announcements, though no specific timeline has been provided.
