S&P Introduces Risk Assessment Framework for Onchain Lending Vaults
S&P Global Ratings has introduced a new framework to assess the risks associated with onchain lending vaults. Announced on October 4, 2026, the "Analytical Approach: Vault Risk Assessments" (VRA) framework aims to evaluate the potential for investor positions to be impaired within these vaults.
The VRA focuses on vaults that pool digital assets, including those backed by crypto or tokenized real-world assets (RWA). However, it does not cover direct exposure to tokenized bonds. The framework provides a forward-looking risk assessment rather than a retrospective analysis.
S&P emphasizes that the VRA is not a credit rating, but it uses a similar letter grade system with a "v" suffix. The highest score, AAA(v), indicates minimal impairment risk. The assessment is based on four key factors: portfolio quality, liquidity pressures, protocol risks, and curator oversight.
Portfolio quality examines the collateral backing the loans, while liquidity pressures assess the ability of depositors to withdraw funds. Protocol risks consider the infrastructure and technical aspects of the underlying lending markets. Curator oversight evaluates the decision-makers who allocate capital within the vaults.
The framework applies to both permissioned and permissionless vault structures and highlights the importance of coded allocation caps as strong risk limits. S&P hopes the VRA will serve as a benchmark for financial instruments using DeFi assets, though it warns against interpreting the grades as guarantees of safety.
