S&P Introduces Risk Ratings for DeFi Lending Vaults
S&P Global Ratings has launched a new framework to assess the risk of decentralized finance (DeFi) lending vaults, a market that has grown nearly sevenfold in two years. The Vault Risk Assessment (VRA) framework evaluates the potential for capital impairment in onchain vaults, with ratings ranging from AAA(v) for the lowest risk to CCC(v) for the highest. The assessment considers six key areas: portfolio credit quality, liquidity mismatch, curator risk, blockchain risk, protocol risk, and vault security and governance.
The VRA is not a traditional credit rating but focuses on the specific risks associated with DeFi lending, such as collateral deterioration, liquidity issues, smart contract failures, and poor management decisions. S&P emphasizes that an AAA(v) rating does not equate to an AAA-rated bond, as the VRA targets different risk factors unique to DeFi.
This framework is designed to provide institutional investors with a standardized way to evaluate DeFi vaults, which are often compared based on yield, total value locked, and historical performance. The VRA could help investors compare the risk-adjusted returns of different vaults, although S&P does not claim that the assessment predicts investment returns. The first VRAs will be assigned separately, allowing investors to compare live yields and liquidity with the assigned risk grades.
S&P’s move is part of a broader expansion into crypto risk analysis, including stablecoin assessments, protocol ratings, and investments in smart-contract security and digital-asset data providers. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between traditional risk analysis and the unique characteristics of DeFi markets.
