S&P Launches Risk Assessment Framework for Crypto Lending Vaults
S&P Global Ratings has unveiled a new risk assessment framework specifically designed for digital asset lending vaults, as these onchain yield products gain traction among mainstream exchanges and wallets. The Vault Risk Assessment (VRA) framework evaluates six key risk areas: credit quality, liquidity mismatch, curator risk, blockchain risk, protocol risk, and security & governance. Unlike traditional credit ratings, the VRA focuses on identifying potential vulnerabilities in a vault’s structure and operations that could lead to investor losses, rather than assessing creditworthiness or yield potential.
S&P emphasized that a strong score in one risk category cannot compensate for significant weaknesses in others, highlighting the complex and interconnected nature of vault structures. The company noted that deposits in digital asset lending vaults have surged to about $10 billion in September, up from $1.5 billion two years earlier, underscoring the rapid growth and increasing adoption of these products.
The framework aims to provide transparency for investors, who often face multiple risk factors when allocating capital to DeFi vaults. These risks, such as liquidity gaps, governance weaknesses, and protocol dependencies, are not always apparent when comparing vaults solely by performance. S&P Global Ratings analyst Lisa Schroeer stressed that the VRA is intended to help investors make more informed decisions by highlighting these risk drivers.
As the sector expands, regulatory uncertainty remains a significant factor. SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce has suggested that some vaults and onchain lending products could fall under federal securities laws, depending on their structure and operations. This regulatory gray area influences how vault operators design governance and decision-making processes. S&P plans to publish its first Vault Risk Assessments in future announcements, though it has not specified which vaults will be evaluated first.
