Salvadoran Government Defies IMF on Bitcoin Holdings
El Salvador's Bitcoin treasury has continued to grow despite warnings from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to limit its accumulation of the cryptocurrency. As of early September 2026, the country held 7,762.37 BTC, valued at approximately $602.84 million.
This stash defies the terms of a December 2024 agreement with the IMF, which prohibited voluntary public-sector purchases of Bitcoin for 40 months. However, the government has continued to acquire roughly 1 BTC per day, accumulating assets worth more than $219 million based on an average acquisition price of around $45,200 per coin and a current price near $74,000.
The IMF had also urged El Salvador to dissolve its $150 million trust fund created during the initial Bitcoin push and return any unused funds to the treasury. This recommendation followed the international lender's earlier statement urging El Salvador to drop Bitcoin as legal tender.
