Salvadoran Volcano Powers Bitcoin Mining Spree
El Salvador has made significant strides in cryptocurrency mining using geothermal energy from its Tecapa volcano. Since 2021, the country has mined a total of 474 Bitcoin worth $29 million using 300 mining processors and 1.5 megawatts (MW) of power allocated out of the 102 MW produced by the state-owned power plant.
The government's decision to adopt Bitcoin as a legal tender in 2021 marked a historic moment for the country, and since then, it has implemented several policies focused on cryptocurrency, including Lightning BTC wallets for citizens. El Salvador now holds a total of 5,750 BTC worth around $354 million.
