San Diego Targets Cryptocurrency Scams with Warning Signs
San Diego may become the first city in California to tackle cryptocurrency scams that target seniors. The scammers persuade victims, often senior citizens, to send them money using ATMs that handle cryptocurrencies. To combat this, city officials propose placing warning signs at all 110 cryptocurrency ATMs operating in San Diego.
The warning signs would be required by law and would be displayed in multiple languages. Similar signs were implemented in Omaha, Nebraska, which led to an 80% reduction in ATM cryptocurrency scams within a year, according to the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP).
City Council President Joe LaCava is spearheading this effort, emphasizing that stopping scams before they occur is crucial. He plans to launch a city website about crypto ATM scams and a community education campaign to raise awareness about the risks.
