Santander Invests $4.3 Million in BlackRock's Spot Bitcoin ETF

Santander, Spain's largest bank, has disclosed its $4.3 million investment in BlackRock's spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF), iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT). This investment is notable because Santander holds shares of IBIT indirectly through an ETF, rather than directly holding bitcoin.

The move reflects a trend of traditional banks expanding their exposure to digital assets through ETFs. Since the approval of spot bitcoin ETFs in the US, institutional investors have used these funds as a key tool to reduce security and regulatory burdens tied to direct custody.

Santander has also been steadily increasing its involvement in the digital asset space. Its digital bank, Openbank, offers customers trading services for cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin.
