Saylor Reiterates Opposition to Bitcoin Consensus Changes, Advocates for Neutral Base Layer
Michael Saylor, Strategy Executive Chairman of Bitcoin, has reiterated his opposition to changes to the cryptocurrency's consensus rules. He argues that the network's base layer should remain simple, neutral, and resistant to political or ideological influence.
Saylor's comments come amid debate surrounding Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 110 (BIP-110), a proposed soft fork that would temporarily tighten Bitcoin's consensus rules to restrict certain non-financial data inscriptions on the blockchain. Supporters of the proposal argue it would reduce blockchain 'spam' and preserve block space for monetary transactions, while critics claim it introduces censorship into Bitcoin's consensus layer.
Saylor rejects the proposal, saying that altering consensus simply because some participants dislike specific transaction types establishes a dangerous precedent that could erode Bitcoin's long-standing commitment to permissionless access. He believes that innovation and policy preferences should be implemented on higher-layer protocols rather than by modifying Bitcoin's base consensus rules.
