Saylor Rejects 'Obsolete' Label for Bitcoin at $80,000

The debate over Bitcoin's relevance and purpose has reignited as the cryptocurrency nears $80,000. Venture capitalist Jason Calacanis likened Bitcoin to a 'CD in the age of Spotify' and 'DVD in the age of Netflix', suggesting it failed to deliver on promises of mass adoption.

Michael Saylor, executive chairman of Strategy, countered with a single figure: roughly $1.6 trillion in market capitalization. He reframed the conversation, stating that Bitcoin's primary application is not as a payment network or platform for smart contracts, but rather 'digital capital' - a vehicle for preserving wealth across generations.

Saylor argued that this purpose does not require technical superiority over newer blockchains, and that challenging Bitcoin's monetary policy, decentralization, security, liquidity, global recognition, and established holder base is a higher bar than achieving technical superiority alone.

Institutional adoption has further complicated the obsolescence argument. Strategy has become more flexible in its management of Bitcoin reserves, selling part of its holdings in 2026 and later resuming buying when financing conditions improved.
