Saylor Sounds Alarm on BIP-110 Protocol Change Threat to Bitcoin
Bitcoin's co-founder Michael Saylor has warned that misguided protocol changes could harm the network from within. He specifically targeted BIP-110, a proposal to restrict non-monetary data in Bitcoin transactions.
Saylor stated that 'bad ideas driving iatrogenic protocol changes' are the single greatest danger to Bitcoin. Iatrogenic is a medical term meaning harm caused by treatment itself.
The BIP-110 proposal, introduced by developer Dathon Ohm and supported by the Bitcoin Knots team, aims to restrict non-monetary data in transactions such as Ordinals inscriptions and BRC-20 tokens. It sets a 55% hash power activation threshold, which is well below the traditional 95% consensus standard.
Not everyone agrees with Saylor's concerns. Adam Back, CEO of Blockstream, warned that consensus-level restrictions could damage Bitcoin's credibility as a store of value and set a precedent for future transaction censorship.
