Sberbank Expands Crypto Collateral Lending Amid Russia's New Framework
Sberbank, Russia's largest bank, is adapting its lending products to accommodate digital assets as the country's new cryptocurrency framework takes effect on September 1. According to Anatoly Popov, deputy chairman of Sberbank's management board, the bank will expand its list of accepted collateral to include Bitcoin, Ether, and USDT after receiving regulatory clearance.
Sberbank has been experimenting with crypto-backed lending since December 2025, when it provided a corporate loan to Intelion Data, a Russian Bitcoin mining company. The bank's experience with cryptocurrency is not just theoretical; it's based on real-world testing of its custody technology and Rutoken hardware devices.
The move is significant because Sberbank is a state-linked bank with over 100 million retail customers and a corporate client base. It also has an incentive to build infrastructure that doesn't depend on Western clearing channels, given the sanctions it faces from the EU and US.
