Sberbank Expands Crypto Lending with BTC, ETH, and USDT Support
Russia's leading bank Sberbank is set to expand its crypto lending services by allowing borrowers to use Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDT as collateral. The move is contingent on the approval of new regulations in Russia, which are expected to pave the way for increased adoption of digital assets in the banking system.
The bank's deputy chairman Anatoly Popov has stated that Sberbank already has hands-on experience with cryptocurrency and is prepared to adopt new regulations. Currently, Bitcoin is considered a core digital asset for secured lending, but the bank plans to increase eligible cases of secured lending assets to include Ethereum and USDT upon approval by the Bank of Russia.
The plan involves borrowers borrowing rather than selling their digital assets, providing an opportunity for large crypto holdings at institutions or businesses to gain liquidity without losing market exposure. This development reflects a trend toward rethinking the relationship between big financial companies and digital assets, with banks investigating genuine use cases like collateral loans, custodian services, and settlement solutions.
