Sberbank Leads Russia's Crypto Market Push
Russia's largest bank, Sberbank, is racing to establish itself as a major player in the country's emerging cryptocurrency market. By December 2026, the state-controlled lender plans to roll out full crypto trading infrastructure, putting it at the forefront of Moscow's new regulatory framework.
The law governing cryptocurrency trading, custody, and settlement will take effect on September 1, 2026, providing a transitional window for licensed intermediaries. Sberbank's ambitious target positions it as an early mover in compliance and client onboarding before the deadline expires in July 2027.
While Western regulators remain gridlocked over cryptocurrency legislation, Moscow is accelerating its own state-aligned digital asset market. The new rules separate trading and custody from peer-to-peer activity, concentrating approved entities like Sberbank to give the central bank direct visibility into flows.
